Good for Goodness Sake

I love this sign. I love what it says and implies. I did not know, until I read Time today, that there were Atheist groups getting them on buses here in the U.S. I knew about the brouhaha in Brittan, but was unaware that there were any signs going on here.

I am thrilled to see it. With the bus service we have in my town, servicing the university, I wish we could get them up on them, but don't see it happening. Even though the buses serve all of the county there are people who would claim that they are part of the school and can not take upon them that type of advertising.

I have said , for a long time, that people can be good people without the Big Sky Man, or the Book, telling you how to live. I can be a good person without all that crap. How can you not? Who are the folks that are weak enough that they simply can not, or are too afraid, to make choices without one or the other. I simply can not understand or fathom these types of people. They have some degree of intellect....why don't they use it to question and ponder? Or do I give them too much credit?

Ahhhhh, Weekends, Fine Weather & Wine

Now, my good buddy Mixter knows that I had plans to drink for the both of us this weekend, and I want her to know that I did my best, BUT this photo is NOT from this weekend, but from a small back story that I am going to share momentarily along with a couple of bits about the weekend that I am still enjoying this morning!

This delightful photo comes to us courtesy of my hubby when he was in Qatar. It was early May and we were having that very unexpected weather in the upper 80's. I had worked all morning and then gotten home and walked the dog AND did yard work. I was not only hot, but tired as well. So it seemed the natural thing to do and have a nice, chilled bottle of a great summer wine!! A wine that went down REALLY, REALLY fast!

Then John called, on Skype, and I brought my laptop out in the back yard to sip some more wine and yak with him. I can not tell you how long we were in to the call, but at some point I passed right out, or should I say, fell asleep!! :-D Next thing I know he is playing some loud music in Arabic over the sky waves and wakes me up. "Nice nap?" He asks. I laugh and we continue, not knowing how long I was out I then receive the photo next day by e-mail. I laughed for a very long time. I am just glad that my laptop did not fall off my lap and into the yard.

The yard is exactly where I am sitting right now, as the sun is coming up, having my coffee and listening to as well as watching the birds. Yes, I have the day off and I am milking every bit of joy out of it that I am able. I plan to buy a few dollars worth of flowers and put them in the bare spots that are left in my garden. It looks like all the seeds John brought me from Australia are coming up. I saved the seed packets so I will be able to identify them and will post a few pics when they bloom.

Yesterday we spent the afternoon at friends having what I call a feeding and wine frenzy, beer for John. They had their pool open, but WAAAAY too cold for this gal. Only kids can tolerate pool water at this early in the summer. Our pal Ed always cooks like he is in the Army and also many varieties of meat, so I decided to allow myself a carnivores delight and had some of all of them. Nothing says summer like the taste of crispy, charcoaled meat from a grill!

Along with the usual, and plentiful side dishes, there were also PIES!! an I just tell you that both John and I were so full that we were really miserable! Both of us had to come home and put on pj's to be more comfortable. I think I may not eat at all today. Seriously, I am just now feeling human again and less like my dog.

Along with that there are three of us here and we are down to one car. The brakes just went out on Max's and, thank God he works the night shift, we are going to shuttle him to work and let him get a ride home.C an't help him out on this one, sadly. Now he can get a feel for real world stuff and see what he will face in a life without the military. That is a story for another time and one that I am not ready to talk about too much right now.

Work is going well and I am assuming the role of leader and playing the corporate game. Proudly serving my corporate master. Hopefully by fall I will have had all the trainings and be ready to take that promotion.

John is leaving at the beginning of June for India and that might be the last job prior to a lay-off. We are hoping not, but he does not believe that they have sold anything. With his company that can change in a split second, so never say die! He thinks there might be a job in Norway. We are hopeful. I do not relish the thought of having to try and live with unemployment. Things are very tight now, but there is a smidge of wiggle room, bu there would be absolutely zero of that with unemployment. We can only hope that India lasts a few weeks,. long enough to make a bit of money and have a few sheckles for an emergency.

Other than that....all is well and Hope it is also with you! Welcome to Guy and it is awesome to have his input and perspective here at the Mix!!!!!!! Guy, you know I adore your sense of humor and look forward to your posts!!

Taking the Plunge into a Double Tall Sugar Free Vanilla Non-Fat extra Whip Latte

This week, even while ill, I met with the muckity-mucks, the powers-that-be, my higher-ups with the coffee mega giant. I have decided to move my way up the corporate ladder.

Even though the economy is not yet recovering or moving in a strong manner there is still possibility for growth within the company. There are promoting from within and not looking for outside people. That is where I fit in.

After three years I have decided to go ahead and work on the promotion. I don't want to look for another teaching job and have to start off at the bottom of the ladder and face another job loss. I am invested in this job and have good benefits. With a promotion it would mean a VERY nice wage increase and even more PERKS! Yes, an intended pun.

They are accepting my offer to train and sending me to several necessary classes where I will learn more about business. Things that have been outside of my previous schooling such as profit and loss statements and various other business classes that I might require. Then my district manager will have some practice interviews with me to prepare for the panel that I will meet with before they give me the final/actual promotion. It could all be in place by the end of Aug. and I could actually stay in my current store. That would be my ideal.

I like wearing a simple "uniform" and not having to dress teacher-like and worry about what I look like daily. I am too advant-guarde to fit into a traditional school setting and have found that this job better suites my lifestyle and personality these days. It seems to be something that I could do for a good while.

Not to mention that we sell my favorite last legal drug!!

Blowing My Brains Out

It has been nine days. Ten if you count the night that I actually started with the sore throat. Ten VERY long and arduous days and nights. Sleepless, hacking, barking, sneezing and blowing, falling asleep with cough drops stuck to either my teeth or the roof of my mouth. Sleeping on either side, sleeping sitting up, basically NOT sleeping. Top it ALL off with a good deal of working and a companion box of Kleenex and an overall bitchy attitude and that will sum up this recent bought with a virus.

Today I am finishing off the OTC bottle of mucus fighting pills as I STILL continue to blow what is left of my brains out! I can not recall having been this sick in quite some time. Well, as an over achiever I can not do anything unless I do it 110%. Yes sir, that's how I roll.

Several near melt downs at work and a few real good melt downs at home helped to seal the deal. I was a total mess! Nothing says fun like having to actually work AND function at home when you are hacking up a lung.

It all started last Tuesday when John & I went to the Cleveland Cavaliers playoff game and I had a sore throat that morning. I knew that was an ominous sign. Already having surprised John with the tickets I could not ruin the good time that we knew we would have. To make it even more fun I had gotten us a hotel room on Priceline dot com, at a very swank $200 dollar a night room, for fifty bucks!!! Love Priceline! Throat was killing me at this point.

Being the intelligent person that I am I continued on to the game and proceeded to scream, what could have been left of my voice, until I had no voice at all. That was smart. It was all downhill from there. not to mention the vast array of germs that I could have picked up from the 25,000+ fans. Should have passed around the Purell a few times.

So I am sure that lack of sleep and a crazy week at work did not help with the severity of this illness. Since I was stressed and my immune system was vastly compromised.

On the upside I think I managed to sleep most of last night. I don't remember it, so I think that it means that I slept. YES!! I have the day off, the sun is shinning and even though I have a list as long as my arm of things that NEED to be done....... it is all good because I think I can get it all done without a cough drop or the ever ready glass of water and the truck sized box of tissues.

Still!!??

Still..... seriously, are they still discussing the sexuality of the Adam guy on American Idol??

It is unfortunate, for me and maybe the readers, that I am still suffering from this nasty & long lingering bronchitis/cold crap. Otherwise I would feel like really tearing into the articles comments about the Danny & Kris fella and their quaint,"churchy, youth-group, God and church loving activities".

If the American Idol show is such a Christian loving/family show then maybe they need to get Paula Abdul off the sauce or pills and have the female contestants stop trying to be so sexual/sensual!

Or maybe this is just the mindless rantings of a Dayquill/Nyquill abusing worker-bee.

Back Off Vatican

I know that If I wasn't getting sick that this would be a much longer and well thought out posting, but with how I feel....... I am not seeing that happening. I will leave that to the folks that comment!

Seems like, once again, the Vatican has their panties in a bunch over another Dan Brown novel/turned movie by Ron Howard.

I was thrilled to hear that this book was being turned into a movie because I always thought that it was the more interesting and exciting book. If you haven't read it you should. It is much better than the DaVinci Code. Although I did enjoy the latter it just didn't hold a candle to A&D.

I can not believe that the Vatican still believes that it has such awesome power, and since they caused them some difficulties, it seems that they might. Silliness or is it? They talk about the" fictionality" of the book, but if that is the case why do they even care? The movie is not claiming to be a documentary, but rather ENTERTAINMENT!!

The Vatican would be wise to relax their collective sphincter and concentrate on something more useful to humanity.

Seriously?

Seriously? I can not even believe the article let alone the fact that there is even any discussion about this topic. It must be a slow news day over at MSNBC.

They are actually asking the question about whether or not people are ready for the winner of American Idol to be gay! I can not even believe that it is a question.

Who cares! Everyone knew Clay Aiken was, and if you didn't I am sorry for bursting your bubble, and he still won. Isn't it supposed to be about the TALENT? At least that is what they say the main theme is on that show.

I will admit that I did watch the very first year when it was a new show and a fresh break on TV. I also liked Kelly Clarkson's voice etc. I have not thought that it was well done for many years now. On a few nights when I was bored as hell, and maybe had a few glasses of wine too many, I have taken a peek and thought that they were mostly boring...except for this Adam kid that is causing the big, fat GAY debate.

He does have a voice, maybe not so much for hard rock, but he is much more fun to watch than the others. Anyway.... I suppose that it is just a ploy to keep people talking, as I am now, that they are making this into a topic. People like to have "Idol" water cooler conversations at work. The producers know that this may be the last year that anyone will even tolerate that show and so they have to cook up something to get/keep viewers.

Kids are mostly the audience and when have they ever cared about some singers sexuality? If they don't give a crap when some rappers shoot and kill each other or beat their women, heavy metal guys go into and out of rehab, why would they give a darn about whether or not Adam is gay? Besides there are so many guys out there wearing eyeliner these days that it is nothing new or anything to talk about!

It's What Ya Have to Do

There are just some things that you have to do. You may not want to do them and they may be quite uncomfortable, but you do them because you know there are just certain things that you have to do. This is one of them.

Sunday I have to go to calling hours for the sixteen year old son of a friend.

I have been to calling hours for many people that I have cared for and many people that were just acquaintances. Many have been sad. Although I do not think that anything can compare to a parent having to bury a child.

They have two others, a 17 year old and a younger one. This was their middle son.

I have heard that there are to be many, many kids from the high school coming. I plan to get there early. I know that it is going to be very emotional. For everyone there.

I have been feeling so many emotions ever since this occurred. Naturally, as a parent, you think about what you would be thinking and feeling if it were you. Then you say to yourself that you don't even want to think about it.

You don't want to go, but they are friends and it is what you have to do. One of the most, if not THE most, unbelievably sad things that you will do in life. Attend the funeral of someone so young.

The Dangers of Moving Stuff

Monday I worked an eight hour day, a day that was especially stressful, and I had to move some furniture that was new to me. My boss and his wife were getting new stuff, so we gave them a small amount of money and had to make arrangements to get the other stuff to our house.

My friend, who has a van, agreed that he would assist. Then I decided to rent a U-Haul and get it all done in one move. There was a seven foot couch, love seat and a large over stuffed chair with a large foot stool. With a van it would have been, back and forth, six trips! After a full day of work I knew that it would not be fun moving furniture into the night.

I got home from work and Max had gotten the house ready and the old couch was ready to move out to the curb. After about 40 minutes of struggling Max & I just could not get it out. I was getting more tired and frustrated. My pal showed up and he and Max got it right out. Then we went and picked up the truck.

Having driven an ambulance I got the same size truck It was a ten foot truck and I knew that it would be big enough. We got there, got it loaded right quick and headed back to my house. This is where the REAL fun began!

I pulled up in front of my house, my buddy was following, and turned on the emergency flashers. Promptly opened the door, put my left foot out the door......and fell right into the street!! Dropped like a rock the three or four feet onto my brick street!

I could not even grab anything or stop myself. I hit hard on my left shoulder and just barely help my head up, which caused me to jerk my head violently. I was stunned and could just roll onto my stomach to get myself up. My friend pulled up right behind me and rolled the window down to ask if I was okay.

We managed to get everything in the house, but here I am a few days later, and I am SOOO stiff and sore that I can hardly move. I have so many stiff muscles. Neck, shoulder, pecs, back,,,,hell, all of them! I slept like crap last night because I could not get comfortable in any position.

Friday I am either going to have to go see the chiropractor , or my friend at work, has offered a free pass that she has for an hour massage. All I know is that I need something!! This just solidifies the fact that I hate moving stuff!!

I am enjoying sitting my stiff butt on this newer love seat though!

Phony Baloney

A week or so ago I had an experience. It was a slap in the face that I had never experienced. Until this particular day at the coffee shop.

I am what I am. I am the way I am and I don't try to come across as anything else, nor do I try to be different things to other people in other situations. If nothing else I am consistently ME!

A girl, that I know and have known for about 14 years and whose parents lived next door, came in to the coffee shop. I had known that she had gotten married in the last few years. I assumed that the khaki wearing, buttoned down shirt guy with her was the new hubby. Back when I had learned of her nuptials I was thrilled because she had dated quite a few different guys and none of the relationships had panned out.

When they came into the shop I noticed her right away and hollered out a ,"Hi"!, and was met with a look and such a half-hearted hello that I was immediately put in my place!! I was totally ignored. When they finally ordered and paid she introduced the hubby, but only told him my name and no mention of how we knew each other and just left it at that!! There was no mention of how we lived next door to her parents, how she spent a couple of summers house sitting and our dogs used to hang out together. We used to have beers and wine in the summers outside on the porch. Nothing but a perfunctory intro to the hubby and a quick exit from the store.

Then there was the dramatic change in her look as well. She is a hair dresser who has a few tattoos and has always been a little bit wild, but this particular day we saw a dramatic change in wardrobe, khaki pants and a plain button down and very "mom like" hair. This new hubby has two young kids from his previous marriage.

I have nothing against taking on the raising of kids and making a home, but to totally make over who you are to fit some neighborhood image of who you should be....that pisses me off. I think it is phony. Even when Max played football, I never fit in with those people/parents, but I remained true to myself and made the best of it. I never set about to re-make my image so they would accept me. That is my big issue here.
Be yourself!
If you can not be accepted for yourself then why are you even with those people?

I know that I have gone through some people in all these years, but have held onto those who are/have been good friends. They have accepted me as I am and I have accepted them. That is what true friends do.

No baloney!!

Weathering the Storm

This organization, the National Organization for Marriage, has put together one VERY frightening video. The things they say seem to be meant to really scare the hell out of someone. I am sure it will work on some. It just really pisses me off.

Rescue Me

It's baaaaaccck!!!!! Yes! Tonight the new season of Rescue Me, my very favorite show, begins again. Twenty two brand new episodes to watch Denis Leary & pals in one of the finest shows cable TV has to offer. from what I have read this season is going to be great and Michael J. Fox is appearing in several of them as a recurring character.

I have been waiting for many, many months for this excellent show to return. If you have not ever watched it you might enjoy the excellent writing and fast paced stories. I will only be disappointed when it is finished. Then I will have to go out and purchase the entire series on DVD. Until I began to watch this show I was never totally sold on Denis Leary......this certainly changed my mind.

Let me also just mention the fun that I was able to have, on one of my last days of my "mini" vacation. As I was sitting on the paper, on top of the examining table, I just knew that this had to be a blog topic! While I waited for what seemed like an eternity for the doctor to even appear I planned out sentences and paragraphs.

I had decided that I had put off this appointment for long enough, since it has been about 7 years since my last trip, and might as well use this open ended time as a chance to get my lazy butt in there.

Yes ladies, I am talking about the, "take everything off, opening in the front, paper sheet", trip to the doctor!! I know 7 years is too long between visits, especially once you hit the big 4-0, BUT.... it is also a trip that I hate to make time out of my day to do AND it just sucks so much time out of an otherwise good day!

I did get right in, but then sat, in said gown and sheet, for a good 30 minutes. While sitting there and counting ceiling tiles I somehow managed to tear a big hole in my exquisite paper sheet, can it really be called a sheet, and thought, "well that's really going to be of use now!"

I really like her and we did manage to cover many good and important topics. I have a few small cysts in the breasts probably caused by the two main ingredients in my life; stress and caffeine. I have to wait and hear how the other stuff is functioning. That god the tools they use are now plastic and not the old school cold metal of our younger days!

Thursday I get to go and get my breast mashed for fun!! Next time I take any kind of vacation....someone remind about the things I should not schedule during that time!! Thank you very much.

The End Is Near

I guess that Newsweek magazine knows that the end is near. At least that is what I have been reading this morning. In yet another round of articles that speaks to the fact that slowly this nation is turning away from and getting out from under the hold that Christianity has had on it for so many years.

In the last few months we have been reading more and more articles that address this issue. telling us how the numbers of Americans that refer to themselves as Christians is declining. How, as a Nation, the numbers are falling for those who say that they follow one religion or another. In reality the numbers are growing in the groups that ascribe to no religion and attend no church.

"
The percentage of self-identified Christians has fallen 10 points in the past two decades."

Now, that may seem like a small and unimportant number, but the fact that the number is growing AND that people are reporting and talking about it IS important.

"It was a small detail, a point of comparison buried in the fifth paragraph on the 17th page of a 24-page summary of the 2009 American Religious Identification Survey. But as R. Albert Mohler Jr.—president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, one of the largest on earth—read over the document after its release in March, he was struck by a single sentence. For a believer like Mohler—a starched, unflinchingly conservative Christian, steeped in the theology of his particular province of the faith, devoted to producing ministers who will preach the inerrancy of the Bible and the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the only means to eternal life—the central news of the survey was troubling enough: the number of Americans who claim no religious affiliation has nearly doubled since 1990, rising from 8 to 15 percent. Then came the point he could not get out of his mind: while the unaffiliated have historically been concentrated in the Pacific Northwest, the report said, "this pattern has now changed, and the Northeast emerged in 2008 as the new stronghold of the religiously unidentified." As Mohler saw it, the historic foundation of America's religious culture was cracking.

"That really hit me hard," he told me last week. "The Northwest was never as religious, never as congregationalized, as the Northeast, which was the foundation, the home base, of American religion. To lose New England struck me as momentous." Turning the report over in his mind, Mohler posted a despairing online column on the eve of Holy Week lamenting the decline—and, by implication, the imminent fall—of an America shaped and suffused by Christianity. "A remarkable culture-shift has taken place around us," Mohler wrote. "The most basic contours of American culture have been radically altered. The so-called Judeo-Christian consensus of the last millennium has given way to a post-modern, post-Christian, post-Western cultural crisis which threatens the very heart of our culture." When Mohler and I spoke in the days after he wrote this, he had grown even gloomier. "Clearly, there is a new narrative, a post-Christian narrative, that is animating large portions of this society," he said from his office on campus in Louisville, Ky."

The way I see it the religious culture is cracking because people are beginning to choose to think for themselves AND dislike the idea of being told how to live their lives by a church. Tired of paying a tithing for what!? Tired of the same old catty gossip. Tired of having to sacrifice every Sunday by being at church for hours when that time could easily be spent with family at home.

When I first left the last church I attended I had felt like there was something wrong with me. That I was just too much of a misfit to fit in and belong, Now I have met several folks from that same church who have also left or stopped attending. I don't bother to ask why, but the fact that it is not just me is finally beginning to set in.

We are beginning to see the tip of the iceberg here. Slowly but surely people are beginning to think for themselves. Maybe they are reading more. Maybe questioning more. Either way the numbers are showing exactly what some of us have been feeling and seeing for sometime. That people are getting tired of the stranglehold that the Christian side has had for far too long. It is time for the free thinkers to emerge. Finally the time is coming where those of us who feel detached from Christianity can speak up and see the numbers grow and not feel like such a small part of society.

Kids, Kids Everywhere

When we had a small child we either got a babysitter or we didn't go out. Period. Now it seems like there are either no more babysitters for hire, or people have just gotten so self-centered that they think that the entire world will love their little precious ones!

Last night some friends, and I, took my mom out to a fun adult style place for food and drinks. It was her 75th birthday. As an aside I consider myself very fortunate that my mom is still in such good health that she does not take any kind of medication!

We began the evening about 5:00PM and sat ourselves in the bar area. Which, as we saw, ended up being such an excellent idea! Sitting next to the windows we could not believe how many families were coming in with small toddlers and babies in carriers. What fun would it be for the babies in the carriers, not to mention how much fun for the folks sitting in those areas.

One thing that I just find intolerable on a night of fun is sitting around people who think that their kids are adorable and the fact that they are squirming in and out of their chairs cutesy. Are you kidding me? Maybe it is the fact that the parents must use the phrase," Get in your chair"!, several dozen times. Maybe the kids throwing stuff like crayons and chicken tenders is enough to make the hair stand on the back of your neck.

What ever it might be, it is enough to make you crazy that these people can afford to go out to an upscale eatery, rather than McDonald's, but not enough to get a babysitter and give the rest of us a break from their kids! We all have either raised our kids or they are nearly gone and would like to go out to adult establishments and NOT be subjected to small children!!

Yes, we did sit in the bar and therefore did not subject ourselves to the nursery school that was the general seating area. Based upon what we saw coming and going, in the four hours that we were there, it was evident that by the time the parents were finished getting the french fries and chicken fingers for their brood the poor server would be lucky to get a marginal tip! It would all have been spent by the time the check came.

Everyday it becomes more and more evident as these parents take their kids in to places where the majority of the crowd is adult. Kids running up and down isles and around tables in an atmosphere where kids are not really liked or appreciated. Yet the minute that you run into or spill something on or knock down one of these little darlings is when you get sued!!

All I am saying is that there are family/kid friendly places and there are not. If adults want to go could they please just decide which type of place they wish to go and make it happen. Get a sitter and go adult, or grab the baby carrier and head to McDonald's or any place with a playground or any type of fun meal/happy meal or chicken tenders or nuggets.

Plus any kind of drink that comes in a plastic cup with a lid and straw!!

Uncharted Waters

Today's Meditation:

I often use how I think I may feel in ten years as a guide. If I have an opportunity to do something new and different, will I regret not having done it? Will I regret having played it safe and not having taken a risk? And on my deathbed (assuming there will be such a thing) will I regret not having done the new and exciting and different and having settled for the safe and convenient?

A few years ago I weighed thirty pounds more than I do now. When I thought of how I would feel twenty years later, I realized that I would be facing many more health problems due to being overweight than I would if I weren't overweight, so I lost the extra pounds. It took about eighteen months to get where I wanted, but now that I'm there, I stay there. I would have been very disappointed in the future if I hadn't lost that weight, and now I won't face that disappointment in the years to come.

We had a friend in New England who wants desperately to move to a warmer climate, but who isn't willing to take the chance. . . . yet. We hope she will someday. But because she won't take that chance, she'll never know what she's missing by not living out her dream, by playing it safe in her comfortable job in her comfortable home. I have nothing against comfort, but it sure can hold us back and hold us down when we fear losing it.

I don't want to face disappointment later in life because I was afraid to take a chance and sail into uncharted waters. As I sail into those waters, I can add much more learning to my life, many more experiences that wouldn't be there otherwise. And those experiences can help me grow into a new person, one who is able to deal effectively with many more situations than the old one.

Questions to consider:

Are you willing to take chances, or do you keep your ship in port?

What kinds of disappointments might you face in twenty years? What can you do now to avoid them?

What kinds of decisions are you facing now that may mean that you'll have to take some risks?
For further thought:

A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for.

I guess that I have always made the choice to sail into uncharted waters. many of the decisions that I have made, in my life, have have come across as unusual, risky and sometimes cavalier. Like the meditation states I have added SO much more to my lifetime learning by not being the "safe boat in the harbor".

Yes, there were many, many times when I was afraid of facing disappointment, but I knew deep within that if I chose the safe route then I might not grow and learn. It always feels comfortable to take the safe route. We are always more comfortable sticking to the same ground that we have always covered. It is always much nicer to not have to map out new roads, but those same old trails can often become stale and quite boring. I also feel like you stop growing when you follow those same well trod paths.

When I stop and think of all the people that I have met because of the diverging paths that I have taken...well, it makes me smile. Had I never taken a chance or risked anything I might have a very safe, but very mediocre life. Not the kind of life seems worth living.

Coffee Cake Jesus or Maybe Wilson

Today at work a lady decided that she did not want this piece of blueberry coffee cake. After I took it out of the bag I saw what appeared to be a face! Was it that of a heavenly being? Like Jesus or Mary in a grilled cheese? In the wood grain of a door? No, it looked more like "Wilson" from the Tom Hanks movie where he was alone on that deserted island. So, we named him Wilson and took a few pictures of him around the coffee shop. I wonder how long we can keep him? I wonder if I should try and sell him on E-Bay or should I wrap him up in plastic for all time and eternity. All hail Wilson!!

This is the second time this weekend that I have gotten caught up in watching, "American Beauty". I just can not ever get passed it on the dial. I love that movie. So, I have basically done nothing but work and nap and eat a bit and watch this movie. Although there is no reason to feel badly...... I have learned to love these days of doing nothing of real consequence!! They are rejuvenating. There are plenty enough days to get things done and do those things that make us feel as if we have been "productive".

Weighty Issues, Dead Scrolls ,Happiness and Mixter's on the Road

After working hard for the last few days I finally have a day off and those things that I have taken issue with have piled up! It can be hard to write about issues after your initial furor has boiled over, but hopefully I can still make a few valid points.

It is also hard when you finally have a day where you have to not only catch up on sleep, but also laundry, dog issues and groceries to deal with. I also want to blog,so.....I have planted myself on the livingroom floor, cup of hot coffee, Matt Lauer in the background and issues before me!

First we go back to the "Happiness Project".
What’s something you know now about happiness that you didn’t know when you were 18 years old?

I look at my son, and what seems to make him happy, and the difference in what makes me happy these days. I don't look for the big things. I can be happy and smile with a small gesture. A nice Burts Bees chapstick can make me happy. A good walk with my dog. A yummy box of Girl Scout cookies can be a pleasant surprise. I now know that happiness in life, for me and maybe many people, is made up of all the small stuff. Sure the big things can be extra special nice, but they are not the stuff of everyday.

If you’re feeling blue, how do you give yourself a happiness boost? Or, like a “comfort food,” do you have a comfort activity?

Unfortunately I have MANY comfort foods! In the last few years I have also developed "comfort activities". Blogging and journaling have been a great comfort to me. It was initially difficult for me to begin my journaling on my laptop, but once I got over the need for pen and paper I began to love it. Just have to remember to hit "SAVE" every so often!

Now, we move on to religion. You had to know that neither Mixter, nor I, can let a post get by without a passing mention of our current fave topic!

'
Biblical scholars have long argued that the Dead Sea Scrolls were the work of an ascetic and celibate Jewish community known as the Essenes, which flourished in the 1st century A.D. in the scorching desert canyons near the Dead Sea. Now a prominent Israeli scholar, Rachel Elior, disputes that the Essenes ever existed at all — a claim that has shaken the bedrock of biblical scholarship.' This comes to us courtesy of Time Magazine. Seems to me, after reading this article, that another of the stories connected to the Bible et al may be just another fabrication with which people used to control/manipulate the peoples. Are we surprised? Only reason that folks will get in to an uproar is because they hate it when their "faith" cage gets rattled.

Finally we get to the turmoil over Meghan Mcains weight. Can we get serious!! Are we actually still so controlled by our high school emotions that a radio chat host would act like a pissed off cheerleader and poke fun at another girls weight?

"Ingraham, using an empty-headed Valley Girl voice, also mocked McCain, saying, "Okay, I was really hoping that I was going to get that role in the Real World, but then I realized that, well, they don't like plus-sized models. They only like the women who look a certain way."

But on Monday, McCain fired back at Ingraham, whom she admitted "I had actually never heard of," before her comments, stating: "It's terrible. It infuriates me. I'm a political writer on a blog and all of a sudden I'm too fat to write? There's no place for weight criticism of women in 2009."

Seems that conservative radio talk person, Laura Ingraham, decided to blast Meghan Mcain not for her politics, but for being fat! Are you kidding me! No matter what Mcains politics I still believe that she can totally speak or write about what ever she likes without her looks or weight coming in to the mix. I think that people who stoop to those tactics are really the ones who are fearful and have inner strength and like to belittle others to make themselves feel better. I applaud Mcains comments and rebuttals! You go girl.

Our girl Mixter is on the road! Yahoo. She landed a cool, new job that is going to require her to be on the road for awhile and living out of a suit case. Blogging in a hotel lobby or library. Hope they won't escort you out of the city as some sort of subversive for your points of view!! Can't wait to hear about her exploits out there in "God Country". even though I did not know that He showed any personal preference. I live in a college town and figure that we are not counted among His favorite places. Too much drinking and debauchery!!

Stem Cells, Gays and Religion...Oh My!

WOW! This mornings perusal of the news surely gave us much food for thought. At one point in time I believe that I had at least fifteen tabs open. Not all of it revolves around Rush or Jon Stewart. There is actually some other news being reported today. Lucky for me they are all hot button issues that make people want to gnash their teeth and wear sack cloth, or something like that.

The first bit comes to us courtesy of U.S. News and World Report. A nice little piece that talks about the ten diseases that might be cured with embryonic stem cell research.
To be fair they also say that maybe they won't be cured, but hasn't that always been the deal with science/research? Sometimes things work and sometimes they don't. You just have to keep moving forward and trying things. Nothing would have ever been developed or cured etc. if we did not constantly move forward and try new things.

Next we move to marriage or should I say the idea of gay marriage. Time magazine proposes that instead of worrying about gays marrying why not just go away with the whole business of marriage!! Then no one would have to worry about or get their panties all in a bunch because a gay couple wants to get hitched! None of us would need to marry. How progressive and liberating. "
There is no baptism certificate issued by the local courthouse, and no federal tax benefits attached to the confessional booth, the into-the-water-and-out born-again ceremony or any of the other sacraments that believers hold sacred.

Only marriage gets that treatment, and it's a tradition that some legal scholars have been arguing should be abandoned. Two law professors from Pepperdine University issued a call to re-examine the role the government plays in marriage in a paper published March 2 in the San Francisco Chronicle. The authors — one of who voted for and one against Prop 8, which successfully ended gay marriage in California — say the best way out of the intractable legal wars over gay marriage is to take marriage out of the hands of the government altogether."

Seriously, I may have been a bit tongue-in-cheek here, but I really have no problem with the concept. We can either all marry or none. Why not let everyone share in the bliss!

Finally, we come to our favorite topic....religion. This has also been a much discussed topic in the religious arena as of late. U.S. News also reported today that the "non-religious" part of America is the fastest growing segment.

"
. In fact, Epstein and the nonreligious students he leads are part of the fastest-growing demographic on the American religious landscape: those who claim no religion whatsoever.

According to a comprehensive national survey released this week by the Program on Public Values at Trinity College, those identifying with no religious tradition, or as atheists or agnostics, account for 15 percent of the population, up from about 8 percent in 1990. "No religion" Americans are the only religious demographic that's growing in every single state."

There is a reason that we are reading, hearing and talking so much on this topic. We are becoming a smarter, more well tread and thinking society. People are becoming tired of being spoon fed the "less than nourishing" stuff that comes out of the organized religions.

"And Kosmin says that many of the 750,000 additional American adults who each year identify as having "no religion" are reacting to what he calls the "triumphalism and judgementalism of the Christian right."

When I was a part of an organized religious group that was where they wanted me to hang out. They want you to come to every thing they sponsor, they want your kids to be in every group. They want you to spend your time there and with all the others as opposed to people outside the group. You become desensitized to the real world. All they want to do is talk about how bad and negative the world is and how they know what is best for you as well as the rest of the sinning population.

"When Greg Epstein arrived as humanist chaplain at Harvard University four years ago, just a handful of students would show up at his events, intended for nonreligious young people looking for a values system and a sense of community. The school's humanist chaplain, first installed on campus in the 1970s, had always taken what Epstein calls a "shy, retiring approach to his presence on campus."

But not Epstein. "The watchword now for young humanists and nonreligious communities like mine around the country is that we're going to be loud and proud," he says. "The time has come to recognize that whatever you choose to call us nonreligious people, we are an integral part of society and culture."

The message has found a receptive audience. All 1,000 tickets to Harvard's big annual event for secular humanists next month—a ceremony to present a humanist lifetime achievement award—have already been sold. And Epstein can't schedule more events quickly enough. "An enormous number of young people have left traditional religion behind," he says. "I'm overwhelmed by the number of people coming to me."

The fact that more people are looking towards Humanism tells us that with knowledge comes power. More and more people are going to look at the God of the bible and realize that any one or person that would ask someone to kill their own son, or commit the violent and vengeful acts that He does, is not something that intelligent people want to be a part of or belong to.

CNBC Smackdown

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of the Daily Show and Jon Stewart. I have been watching for days as the stories and arguments grew about him and CNBC's Cramer. I was fortunate enough to actually watch the entire episode that Stewart devoted to interviewing Cramer. Instead of his usual funny news packed show we got an entire show that talked about the economy and how it should be presented.

It seems that even the White House took the time to catch the episode. I guess the economy is something that everyone is sitting up and taking notice about!! Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that he "enjoyed it thoroughly". CNN even announced Stewart as the "winner" of the engagement.

If you have not had the opportunity to see this exchange you might want to try and find it on the net. I have to admit that I did not ever see Stewart as a tough questioner or as a serious journalistic force. After watching him question and pound Cramer I stand in awe. I respect that he is not only quite knowledgeable, but also very serious about the crap that is going on with the economy and the fact that people have questions.

Kudos to Stewart for taking the time to use his show as a vehicle to get this crap noticed. I know that ratings and the like are also involved, but I admire the man for changing the format of the show for the evening to really get into the meat of the financial matter and for taking this guy to task!
